1-On-1 Grants Coaching

MARYN BOESS

Personal Grants Coach

How could an hour or two with a personal grants coach help you and/or your organization break through to new, higher, more powerful levels of grants success?

  • What would greater success look like in your organization's grants-related efforts?

  • What would support you in creating your most successful year yet as a grants practitioner?

  • Where would you love to take your grants-related work next - if only you knew how?

For years it has been my privilege to support the grants success of hundreds of community organizations across the country, through the tools and training we offer through JUST GRANTS! Now I look forward to taking on a limited number of grants coaching clients on a short-term basis. And I'm pleased to invite you to consider working with me in this direct, immediate, and very powerful way.

May I put my 20 years of in-the-trenches experience to work for you, as your personal grants coach?

What does it mean to have a "personal grants coach"?

  • It means we would work together in short, intense blocks of time, according to your needs, schedule, and budget. A session can be from 30 minutes to several hours.
  • Ours might be a one-time-only assignment to address a short-term or immediate issue. Or we can decide to "meet" for multiple sessions over several weeks or even months.
  • The coaching can be in person (Phoenix area only) or by phone, individual or with your team.
  • The focus will be on topics that you identify as central to your vision of grants success. You bring your questions and concerns. . . your readiness to stretch, think outside the box, see with new eyes, try something different. I'll bring the insights, ideas, and solutions gleaned from 20+ years of in-the-trenches experience at every level and in every aspect of grantsmanship -- what works, what doesn't work, and what makes the difference.

Let's talk. Tell me what you'd love to do, if only you knew how. The following links offer some thoughts about what our grants coaching relationship might look like. Take me up on my offer of a no-obligation, free 20-minute initial consultation. You've got absolutely nothing to lose - and absolutely everything to gain!

Organizational Flex-Pack:
Brainstorming and Solution-Finding

What are the grants-related challenges and opportunities you're facing in your organization . . . right now? Would two to four hours of coaching time and expertise give you fresh insights, perspectives, approaches for meeting those challenges and opportunities?

Let's talk!

This is your time, your chance to ask for - and receive -- the focused, one-on-one, strategic guidance that can put your organization squarely on the track to grants success, and keep it there. Here are a few possible topics to get you thinking:

  • Grants readiness: Where are we, and what can we do to better position ourselves to secure and successfully manage grant funding?
  • Mission focus: How can we connect our grantseeking efforts with our mission? How do we determine, agree on, take action on our strategic grantseeking priorities?
  • Partnerships: What strategies or steps can help us successfully navigate the challenges of collaboration? What are some creative new approaches we can take to partnering?
  • Planning: How can we keep our grant proposals grounded in solid program planning? What are the planning issues we need to keep in mind to make sure we're building strong, cohesive, workable programs and services?
  • Funder research and relationships: What kinds of funders (private or public, large or small, local or national) might be most interested in supporting the work we do? What will help us forge strong(er) ongoing relationships with our prospective funders?
  • Turning points: Our organization is in transition and we're facing special challenges: We're new; we're growing rapidly; we've never sought grant funding before; we're undergoing major restructuring. How does our organizational lifecycle stage affect our grantseeking strategies? How can we chart a successful grants course through these changes?

Options:

  • By phone: 2 hours total by-phone coaching time (scheduled at your convenience in 30-minute blocks, to give you maximum flexibility): $150 for 2 hours total
  • On-site (metro Phoenix area only, or by special fee arrangement for travel): One 2-hour coaching session, in person at your site (great for more strategic discussions and/or to meet with your team as a group): $200 per 2-hour session
  • Two+Two Combo: The best of both worlds for maximum impact and flexibility -- one 2-hour, on-site session; and an additional 2 hours by phone, at your convenience: $300 for 4 hours total

It's All About You:
Coaching for the Grant Practitioner

Whether you're on staff or working on your own, as a grant professional it's vital to invest in "sharpening your saw," in the words of Stephen Covey.

What issues, challenges, roadblocks are you encountering in your own grants work? What habits or patterns of thought, relationships, or behavior hold you back from all the success you deserve, personally and professionally? Where might a little honest feedback and expert advice help you fine-tune your skillset and presentation as a grant practitioner?

Following are a few examples of typical concerns. Let me know what's on your mind, and let's talk . . . about you!

  • Help! I get writer's block every time I start work on a proposal. Why? and what can I do about it?
  • I feel overwhelmed by too much to do, and too little time . . . are there techniques to help me manage my time more effectively?
  • How can I build confidence when I'm meeting face to face with a foundation program officer?
  • I'm having problems around our grants work with my boss/executive director/board . . . can you help?
  • How can I expand/get more from my professional network?
  • I have a concern or question about an ethical issue related to my grants work or my organization . . .
  • Help -- I'm burning out! How can I reconnect with my passion for the work? What are my options for changing the dynamics of my work?
  • I think I'd like to become a private consultant but I'm not sure what's involved . . . or if I have what it takes.
  • Can you help me brainstorm ideas for marketing my consulting services/managing my practice/building my client base?

By phone only, 45-minute sessions:

  • 1 or 2 sessions: $60 each
  • 3+ sessions: $50 each

Writing Review, Feedback, and Coaching

You want to make sure your grants-related written materials are clear . . . powerful . . . well-organized . . . and absolutely on target.

And I can help!

I'll read your materials (case statement, letters of interest or intent, proposal narrative, full grant application, etc.) and offer detailed, expert, very specific feedback and suggestions for strengthening your communications. You can have me review and give feedback before you submit your materials to a funder . . . or ask me to review a "declined" proposal and offer suggestions for its next submission. I was a professional writer and editor long before I was a grant practitioner . . . let me use these skills to help you:

  • Fine-tune word choices for clarity, concreteness, energy
  • Identify and repair information gaps, logical inconsistencies, or unsupported claims or assumptions
  • Strengthen and clarify structure and order of information for maximum clarity and impact
  • Target your writing to zero in on the reviewer's interests, priorities, and concerns
  • Identify and eliminate yellow flags, vague or unfocused language, jargon

Options:

  • 1-2 pages, single-spaced: $150 (includes written feedback and 15-minute phone followup)
  • 3-5 pages, single-spaced: $60 per page (includes 30-minute phone followup)
  • 6 or more pages, single-spaced: $50 per page (includes 30-minute phone followup)
  • For an additional fee, I will critique your proposal against a specific funder's guidelines to make sure you've crossed all the t's, dotted all the i's, and answered all the questions clearly, correctly and compellingly.

  • Maryn Boess has provided our team with clear, highly focused and very practical information about the world of grantsmanship.  Her warm, conversational style was both refreshing and enlightening.  Because of her deep understanding as a grants professional, she was able to address our specific questions and issues in an effective and efficient manner. -- Dr. Larry McBiles, Executive Director, Arizona Foundation for Resource Education

  • In March I wrote an application for a grant from National Court Appointed Special Advocates to support the local CASA's recruitment efforts. We had requested just under $80,000 over two years. I learned yesterday that the program was awarded a $60,000 grant! I am so thrilled, as are the CASA people. I used many of the tools you provide and incorporated many of the concepts you have taught me. This is my first successful non-governmental grant application. Thanks for everything. -- Karen Godzyk, Contracts & Grants Administrator for the PimaCountyJuvenileCourtCenter

  • Maryn’s energy, expertise and enthusiasm were contagious, enlightening, and infectious. I'm on a seriously restricted budget but felt I got excellent value for my money (which doesn't happen all that much). -- Maryruth M. Monahan, Sun Sounds Radio for the Reading Impaired

  • I want to thank you so much for the wonderful instruction, forms and encouragement that I have received from you! I don't believe there is anywhere else that I could have received the quality of training that I have (through your training). -- Marilyn Hill, Arizona Department of Commerce

  • Maryn's workshops and progressive grantsmanship services are of huge benefit to the Town of Florence's capacity to develop and implement viable, sustainable community-economic development strategies.
